If you have ever been in a public or school library, chances are you have seen at least one poster of a celebrity holding a book with the word “READ” shouting at you in text form. Or you may have seen our library’s own staff in their version of these READ posters during National Library Week.
Here is me, holding one of my favorite books of all time, Astronaut Wives Club:
Well, these posters started in 1985 from the America Library Association. It was to encourage kids and adults alike to, well, read. Some celebrities are seen holding their favorite books and some are holding books that have to do with a movie or TV show they acted in (like Taylor Swift and The Giver).
I find these posters hilarious but a great piece of Americana. They immortalize celebrities in a different way than they are usually portrayed. My high school had a large collection of these posters and my public library has an Elvis READ poster on the door leading to the magical Book Sale Room.
I will share with you some of my favorites that I found.
Man, Shaq is really lovin’ that book…
A sensitive man in touch with nature.
You can purchase your very own READ poster for just 18 dollars from the American Library Association so John Cena can watch you sleep after you READ a good book.
