It’s Freelance Writing Appreciation Week

Toni Morrison once said “if there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”  Almost every want-to-be writer has dreamed of penning the “Great American Novel” and maybe Toni’s quote is the motivation one needs to begin.  Some writers are fortunate to secure editors that work for companies; however, many do not have that opportunity and call themselves “Freelance Writers.”  Since 2013, the second week in February has been celebrated and designated as “Freelance Writers Appreciation Week.”  It is a time to show gratitude for those who share their talent by creating great content.

In the past, freelance writers primarily wrote for newspapers, magazines, and other print publications; however, now there are so many more opportunities in the online environment and in so many genres.  Many freelance writers have their own blogs.  If this is something that interest you, here are some tips to consider:

  • Find your niche
  • Focus on goals
  • Network with other freelance writers
  • Develop your own presence

Most freelance writers have no experience when they have decide this is the profession for them; therefore, here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Take a freelance writing course
  • Become a guest poster.
  • Publish your work on “free” sites
  • Create your own writers website

Did you know that some well-known authors started out as freelancers?  Stephen King, Isaac Asimov, Upton Sinclair, and Ray Bradbury (published articles in various magazines that eventually led to his book “The Martian Chronicles”), all experimented with freelance writing.  It is apparent that freelance writers make the world a better place by contributing their time, energy, and knowledge to enrich our lives and make us more informed, educated, and cultured.  They are good with words, have flexible schedules and can work anywhere.  If this is something that interests you, consider this a profession for you and check out the resources below:
