January is National Mentoring Month

teammates mentoring logoJanuary is often known as a time of self-improvement, goal setting, and New Year’s Resolutions. It is also a great time to reach out and help others, and it just so happens that January is National Mentoring Month. According to mentoring.org, this annual celebration of mentors helps to “recruit new mentors, advance the mentoring field’s legislative priorities, and drive meaningful change for young people.”

If you are looking to become a mentor, there is a great local resource in Teammates.org. Started in 1991 by former Nebraska Cornhuskers Football Coach Tom Osborne, Teammates is an organization that connects youth with volunteer mentors. Mentors spend an hour each week with a student, sharing a hobby or special interest, helping with homework, or just talking and providing a sounding board for the student.

There are many benefits to students with mentors. Mentors provide some stability and support, and students are with mentors are more likely to graduate high school. If you are interested in volunteering for Teammates, you can apply online at Teammates.org.
