World Teacher’s Day- Librarians are Teachers Too

From childhood to adulthood, many excellent teachers have influenced me over the years. In fact, many of them have inspired me to be a teacher to others.  Do you remember a teacher or mentor that has made a positive impact in your life? Perhaps you have one here at Bellevue University.

On this day, October 5th of every year, this is a day to celebrate World Teachers’ Day.  This global event began in 1994 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).  This is an opportunity for you to reflect on the role that past educators have played in your life. This day also provides us with the opportunity to think about the meaningful interactions you may have had with your past teachers.  If your former teacher is still teaching, a good way to celebrate World Teacher’s Day is to create and design a personal card, or maybe write a poem expressing your gratitude to their impact in your life.  Even a simple ‘thank you’ can make a teacher’s day.  By taking time this October to thank the educators that have worked so hard throughout the challenges of these last few years, we can honor those teachers that invested in us, and in some cases, changed the course of our lives.

Even after formal education, I was fortunate to have a mentor and co-worker in my first professional librarian position after graduating from library school over 20 years ago!  Although my former mentor and co-worker is now retired, we have maintained our friendship by sending each other letters and cards around the holidays.  While my job title is Reference/Instruction Librarian, I am privileged and honored to spend each day teaching Bellevue University students, faculty and staff in using the Library’s resources and services.  Online library instruction sessions are offered each month, as well as online quarterly sessions on APA referencing. Most of the sessions are offered through Zoom and are recorded upon request.  If you are interested in joining me (and I hope you will) for any of my online educational opportunities, please go to the Library’s website library.bellevue.edu and go to the Library’s calendar to register.  A link to the Zoom session will be sent to your preferred e-mail before the session begins.  I look forward to working with you!
