Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Staff Education Week

Learning to care for people with Alzheimer’s and Dementia is the first step in understanding the differences between the two diseases.  The week of February 14 – 20, 2021 is “Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Staff Education Week.”  The National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP) has dedicated a week to raise awareness while educating on the caring of persons suffering from the condition.  Healthcare professionals are encouraged to learn new ways and techniques to assist their patients throughout the week.

You may hear “Dementia”” and Alzheimer’s Disease” used interchangeably; however, they are not the same.  Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia because it progressively worsens with time and affects memory, language, and thought.  Dementia can be describes as the all-encompassing term used to describe those with memory loss symptoms, the inability to perform daily activities, and communicate effectively.

Educating caregivers is what this week is all about and providing the tools necessary is the first step in providing proper care.  It often includes a team of people, including the families of those suffering with the conditions.  Furthermore, as the conditions progress, the caregiver roles change; hence, the importance of bringing awareness to this week.  Since there is no way to stop the progression or cure the disease, there are options.  Helping individuals living with the disease understand the options available can result in a better quality of life.
