Explore your creative side and learn how to master the ancient (and simple) craft of crochet. From lacey doilies, to amigurumi, to more practical items such as hats and scarves, crochet has been around since the 1800s. This fun and relaxing hobby is simple to learn on your own, or from an experienced loved one.
There are many great reasons to take up crocheting as a hobby.
- There is a tangible benefit from completing a crocheted scarf or hat. Whether you are creating for yourself or for a loved one, handmade items are full of love. These projects have a clear beginning and end, and once complete, it can be used and admired for years to come. Crochet is a productive project to work on while you might otherwise be idle: watching TV, listening to a podcast, or between classes.
- There are endless possibilities for learning how to crochet, from old school books and reading patterns to following along with YouTube videos. Many find crocheting easier to learn than knitting, and it is faster as well. A library of patterns is available through Ravelry, a community dedicated to crochet and knit projects. An easy tutorial on the site is found at https://www.ravelry.com/tour/getting-started
- Maybe you have a friend or family member who would love to crochet with you. Whether you are the teacher, learner, or partner, crocheting can bring people together. Look for local classes or organizations where you can enjoy good company while you crochet away.
Crocheters (and knitters) of all skill and experience levels are welcome to join the Nebraska Knit & Crochet Guild who host weekly meetings in the Omaha area. More information can be found at https://nebraskaknitandcrochet.org/
- There are several notable charities that appreciate the personal touch of crocheted items.
The Magic Yarn Project is a nonprofit that uses crochet patterns to make fun wigs and beanies for children suffering from cancer. Individuals can donate supplies or finished projects that are sure to make these little fighters smile. Tutorials and instructions can be found at https://themagicyarnproject.com/
Premature babies can find comfort in crochet too. The group Octopus for a Preemie is dedicated to providing octopuses for every premature baby in any US hospital that allows donations. The tentacles on these special toys are just the right size to allow the baby to grasp, like they might in the womb. Every octopus must be inspected for size, tentacle length, and holes prior to donation. The Facebook group has all the information needed for prospective volunteers https://www.facebook.com/groups/octoforapreemieus/?hc_location=ufi
- When you have a hobby that is enjoyable, it can relive you of your stress. Since crocheting is so easy to take on the go, you can get that great sense of accomplishment and relaxation wherever you go. There is a flow and rhythm with crochet that is almost meditative.
