What do you picture when you think of a robot? If you are like most people, something vaguely human-like might come to mind; something that blinks and beeps, and rolls around performing simple tasks. In fact, robots can look like this, but most do not. Continue reading
The title alone should tell you that “Fire the Pretty Girl” is no ordinary dry business success story. Entertaining, engaging, and thoroughly readable from the first sentence, where John Morton laments, “If she wasn’t so pretty, I wouldn’t have fired her,” it follows his nontraditional and ultimately successful journey through the business world. If you are like most people the first time you encounter the library website, you may feel a bit overwhelmed. Where are the scholarly journals? Where is company information? How can I find a book? How about an eBook? Can I access the online library from home? You can find the answers to all those questions and more in BUILD IT, the Bellevue University Information Literacy Development Interactive Tutorial and its new companion LibGuide BUILD IT Express. On February 5, 2014, the library staff members held their annual Professional Growth Day. We all heard a variety of wonderful information and felt we could not keep it to ourselves. So, we have decided to share the ideas from our presentations given on that day.
In this first post, Margie takes us through her process of remaking BUILD IT.
Change is good, so they say, but it can be exasperating too. Take BUILD IT, aka Bellevue University Information Literacy Development Interactive Tutorial, for instance.
Have you heard about BUILD IT? If not, it is time you did! If you have ever felt lost in the library, have no idea where to find those scholarly articles your instructor always wants you to use, or just need a refresher course on writing a research paper, then the Bellevue University Information Literacy Development Interactive Tutorial, or BUILD IT, is for you. BUILD IT is five years old now, and has been helping students with all those things since its launch in September 2006.
So what exactly is BUILD IT and what is information literacy? Basically, BUILD IT is a user friendly online guide to the Bellevue University Library and all its services and resources. But more than that, it takes you step by step through the process of finding and recognizing good authoritative information, then using and communicating that information in your papers and presentations, while citing it properly – and that in a nutshell is what information literacy is!
BUILD IT is organized into five sections, or modules. Take a look at the sitemap to get a feel for what is included in each module. Go through it page by page or just look at the pages you need. Even if you think you already know how to find information (that’s what Google is for, right?), take a look at BUILD IT then take the quizzes at the end of each of the five modules; we guarantee you will learn something! By the way, it even gives you tips for using search engines like Google effectively to find good information, but we think you will see the benefits of using the library instead!
BUILD IT has grown and changed over the years, as it is constantly revised to keep up with the ever growing and changing library. This makes it a great way to keep up with all the changes and to feel confident and comfortable using the library. Reaction to BUILD IT has been overwhelmingly positive, and hundreds of students have used the Comments form at the end to let us know how helpful it has been:
- This gives all the information you can possibly need to succesfully complete papers.
- Great tutorials! Very helpful and informative.
- Thank you so much for a comprehensive presentation on writing quality research papers!
- This was great and had tons of useful information.
- The Build It tutorial was very well put together.
- This has been the best University library information …of all the things available to the students.
