Watch Out Zoo…Here We Come!!!

What a way to start the month!!!  Zoos all around the country are starting to reopen just in time for “National Zoo and Aquarium Month.”  Coincidence?  Maybe…  However, now is an excellent time to think about venturing out once again and visiting your local zoo. In 1982, President Ronald Regan proclaimed June as “National Zoo and Aquarium Month” for playing a major role in the cultural life of our nation and conservation.  The proclamation goes on to say that zoos and aquariums have become a valuable and unique asset.1

The Henry Doory Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska, is scheduled to reopen on June 1st.  Yes, there will be some noticeable changes, and yes, there will be some inconveniences.  Nevertheless, the zoos need us and our donations more than ever so get out there and plan your adventure.

Zoos have often been a prominent subject of many books, both fiction and non-fiction.  Here are a few titles to get you started:

  • Faithful Elephants: A True Story of Animals, People, and War
  • Life of Pi
  • Pride of Baghdad
  • We Bought a Zoo
  • The Zookeeper’s Wife

Just as libraries are more than warehouses of books, zoos are more than collections of animals.  Zoos are educational, entertaining, recreational, and engaging.  So why not check out some of these sources throughout the month…
