Technology plays an active role in almost everyone’s daily life. Whether it’s the computers we use for work, our phones, social media, or entertainment, it’s hard not to be connected to technology and the internet these days. For better or worse, it’s a part of our society now.
This is a theme the band YACHT, and singer/founding member Claire L. Evans play with quite often. YACHT stands for “Young Americans Challenging High Technology”, and they are aptly named, with such songs as “I Thought the Future Would Be Cooler” and “War on Women”.
Evans’ first book, Broad Band: The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the Internet, released in 2018, and follows the progress of the internet and computing as far back as 1842. It dives into the lives of the women who pioneered technology and computing into the modern day, shedding light on some of their untold stories. Her book can be found in the Bellevue University Library, and wherever books are sold.
Besides being an author and musician, Evans is a journalist for many tech-based sites, such as WIRED, Terraform (VICE), and The Guardian. Her band YACHT just released their seventh studio album, Chain Tripping, August 30th 2019.
