Have you ever gone through the drive-thru for your coffee and the barista tells you that the person in front of you paid for your coffee? Doesn’t that just make your day? And, as a result you decide to “pay it forward” by paying for the person’s coffee behind you. Well, this is just one kind gesture of how people celebrate World Kindness Day, which is happens to be today – November 13.
World Kindness Day was created in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, which is an organization formed from various “kind-minded” groups with the mission of creating kindness throughout the world. Currently, there are over 25 nations represented including: Australia, Canada, China, France, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States – to name a few. As researchers have discovered, if someone has made you happy, you are more willing to be kind to others which will have a positive effect on spreading happiness and positivity throughout the world.
So, how can you be kind today? Feel free to visit the Random Acts of Kindness website for ideas or here are a few examples:
- Smile and greet someone
- Hold the door for a stranger
- Volunteer at a soup kitchen
- Buy a coffee for someone
- Bring in goodies to work
- Buy a meal for someone who needs it
- Treat animals with kindness – walk a dog or give your pets a treat
- Be kind to the environment – recycle or donate items
- Compliment someone
- Teach your kids how to be kind
- Assist a neighbor with a task
- Deliver a kind note to a co-worker, teacher, neighbor, or friend
If you start carrying out some of these small acts of kindness on a regular basis, others will follow in your footsteps, resulting in kindness being spread throughout the world!
