CINAHL: A Valuable Resource for Healthcare Courses

MedicalSince this week, (September 26-30 2016) is National Health and IT (Information Technology) Week, we are highlighting one of our newest and all-inclusive health-related databases, CINAHL Complete.  CINAHL Complete (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) is offered through EBSCOhost , (one of our database vendors.)  It provides core nursing and allied health journal titles and complements some of the current nursing and health databases already available through the Bellevue University Library, such as ProQuest Family Health, ProQuest Health Management, and ProQuest Nursing/Allied Health Source.

CINAHL Complete indexes more than 5,300 journals, and has full text access to approximately 1,400 journals.  The records in CINAHL complete date from 1937-present and there is no embargo for many of the frequently-used journals.  This means that CINAHL complete is updated regularly with recently published articles.  CINAHL Complete articles cover a broad array of over 50 nursing specialties.  Included subject areas are:  nutrition, general health, medicine, and pathology.

There are a variety of search methods that can be used when searching CINAHL Complete.  We find that using significant words, phrases and the controlled vocabulary work best.  One can start with a basic search by using significant words or phrases in the search box and then using limits, for example.  Check the boxes to include full text, publication date(s), gender type, publication type and age group.  In an Advanced search, significant words and phrases can be placed in designated fields such as:  all-text, title, author, and abstract. This method can oftentimes yield more relevant search results.
