Kanopy Database

Are you searching for new video material for a course? Perhaps you are looking for a documentary, a TV series, or a foreign language film? The Bellevue University Library has you covered with Kanopy!

Kanopy is our newest film database that works a little differently from our other databases. It uses a patron-driven acquisition (PDA) model in which we only pay for what we view. Certain triggers, such as four views of a single title lasting at least 30 seconds, will generate the purchase. So, instead of paying for each film, we still have access to the thousands of films available, but will only be charged for the ones that are triggered!

Kanopy works closely with film distribution companies and filmmakers to provide thousands of videos from many award-winning collections. The films cover subject areas of nearly every area imaginable, from “Art” to “Business” to “Media & Communication” to “Technical Training,” as well as popular feature films and documentaries. Over 300 PBS titles are available, including one of their more recent series, “The Roosevelts.” There are over 1,100 business titles, including business case studies, and films from Kantola, Learning Seed and Criterion, to name a few.

As you are navigating through Kanopy, the first screen displayed will list films sorted by various collections. The first collection listed on the top of the screen is “New to Kanopy.” Other collections listed include: monthly corresponding themes, “Buzzworthy, “Student Picks,” “Kanopy Staff Picks,” and much more. You can either click on the collection title or you can click on the yellow arrow to the right of the collection titles to view more titles in the collection.

Another way to search films is to search by subject. By hovering over “Browse Subjects” in the top left corner, a list of subject areas will display in which you can continue hovering over various subjects for more specific collections. Once you select a collection, you can then search by: “Suppliers,” “Features,” “Filmmakers,” “Languages,” “Captions,” and “Year of Production.” This will help filter the films to find the most valuable film for your course.

So, why read more about it? Try it now! Kanopy can be accessed from the A-Z Database list on the Library webpage.
